Re: Informations about DO217 with nr. 1577 or 1573??
I don't have information on such a Do 217 -- of course that doesn't rule it out. However, I wonder if your "1" is really a "4".
Wk Nr 4577 from 9./KG 100 was lost in combat over Salerno on 13 Sep 43. Wk Nr 4573 from Stab III./KG 100 was lost in an accident (on-board weapons explosion) over the Strait of Messina on 5 Sep 43. MB |

Re: Informations about DO217 with nr. 1577 or 1573??
Like MB I could not find a Do217 with such a number lost in the August to October 1943 period, that is assuming the 1577 is a werk nummer. The only Do217's I found near this were 1508 and 1518 both Do217N night fighters. I read that some Do217J night fighters were supplied to the Regia Aeronautica but have no idea of the werk nummer range of these aircraft. With the Mussolini ring found at the wreck site I did wonder if this could have been flown by an Italian crew. From the photos on the previous thread on this aircraft the number did definitely look like 1577/3,
Hope You find the answer Regards Brian Bines |

Re: Informations about DO217 with nr. 1577 or 1573??
Many thanks to all for your answers. Because I not find any Do217 with 1577 I must assume that DO217 we find is 4577. Informations we know is that it was fallen in Salerno area (route in direction Foggia) in september 1943. We read about 16 sept. but it can be a error. So, please, send me all informations you have about Do217 4577 and his crew. Thanks again.

Re: Informations about DO217 with nr. 1577 or 1573??
Aircraft was marked ZY+MA and was from 9./KG 100. It was shot down during an afternoon attack on the cruiser USS Philadelphia, one of two Do 217 lost that day. (The cruiser was not hit or damaged.) The aircraft commander appears was Obltn. Erwin Burghoff with the other crewmembers as indicated in Brian Bines's posting of 19 June.
