Me.109 - over Doncaster!
Does anyone know anything about an Me.109 that allegedly crashed near Doncaster (northern England) during WWII? The aircraft was the subject of a brief report in the Yorkshire Evening Post on 12 Sept. I must say that I am highly sceptical about this report.

Re: Me.109 - over Doncaster!
Hi Bill
Cannot see how that is possible! However, I have spoken to people here in Leicester who swear a Me109 crashed in Leicester during the Battle of Britain. Coincidentally, they all remembered it crashed in Leicester's Victoria Park... exactly where a crashed Me109 was erected during the city's Spitfire Fund week! Austin |

Re: Me.109 - over Doncaster!
I can think of two slim possibilities.
Firstly a fighter that just flew on northwards until it ran out of fuel. Secondly a recce aircraft later in the war - as they could reach Scapa Flow from Norway then Doncaster from France does not seem impossible. I don't see either as likely. |

Re: Me.109 - over Doncaster!
Hi,
When I looked into this one several years ago for a friend I think that we established from speaking to local people that the myth might have been based upon / due to a crashed aircraft that was doing the rounds to raise money etc for the war effort. 109s aren't really my thing so I didn't go any further. |

Re: Me.109 - over Doncaster and Italians over Gloucester
Love these stories.
My dad is still to this day despite many many arguments, convinced that in 1940 Italian double winged bombers flew over Gloucester with the local AA guns banging away at them. He said they headed north for Birmingham then an hour or so later came back and were again shot at by Gloucester's AA. He will go to his grave thinking this is true despite me even proving they could not have made it that far. Why let the truth get in the way of a great story eh! |

Thanks to all who replied. Scepticism confirmed, I think.

Morning Bill, as a Doncastrian and an avid Luftwaffe enthusiast, ive yet to come across any evidence to corroborate this claim!

Re: Me.109 - over Doncaster!
So which one's existence do we doubt, the 109 or Doncaster (or both)?

Re: Me.109 - over Doncaster!
Tapper, I have a photo somewhere of an HP 42 in camouflage at Brockworth, not so far from Gloucester, in 1940. Double-winged bomber? This might just be what your Dad saw, embellished by local rumour!
