Can anyone help with this 66 Sqn Spitfire II?
Long Range Spitfire II serial number P8131 was apresentation Spitfire, LUTON II, that joined 66 Squadron on 26 June 1941. F/Lt H R Allen claimed a probable victory over a 109 on 20 August 1941. The aircraft was damaged on 21 December 1941 at Portreath and transfered to Westlands for repair.
I am trying to establish the aircraft code letter. The squadron codes were LZ, and the individual letter was either an E or an F - can anyone confirm which it was? It seems as thought it may have been squadron practice to paint over serial numbers for these aircraft - does anyone by chance have a correlation of aircraft code letter to serial number for the Spitfires at 66 squadron during this time period - June 1941 to Dec 1941? I would be grateful for any help with the above. Thanks PR |
