Takoradi September 1940
Hi guys
The overland air route from Takoradi (Gold Coast) to Egypt was first flown by RAF aircraft commencing 20 September 1940, when one Blenheim guided six Hurricanes. I am aware that the Blenheim and Hurricanes (all in crates) were delivered to Takoradi by HMS 'Argus' on 5 September, and assume that the pilots arrived at the same time, but who were they? I have just been Googling and found what I believe is misinformation that apparently eminated from Churchill's Their Finest Hour! He wrote that a dozen crated Blenheims and Hurricanes arrived by sea (freighter?), followed next day be 30 Hurricanes aboard 'Argus' ('Argus' arrived 5 September). In my very humble opinion, I don't think this is correct. I believe the crated Blenheims and Hurricanes were aboard 'Argus' (12 aircraft). The next delivery via 'Furious' was in November, and numbered 30 Hurricanes. I stand to be corrected! Cheers Brian ![]() |
