March 18, 1945 over Berlin

The 457th Bomb Goup was involved in a mission over Berlin on March 18, 1945. They reported encountering several Me262's. They were credited with two kills, however the German jets were reported to have been driven off by P-51s. Does anyone know which FG/ FS those P-51's may have belonged to? Was it the 332nd?

Thanks

Re: March 18, 1945 over Berlin

Greetings

about 35 Me 262's of I. and III./JG 7 were involved with R4M rockets on this date against the US 8th Air Force heavies. The 55th, 339th, 352nd, 359th and the 364th fg's all put in claims for the day. The 332nd fg was not operating in the 8th AF area of operations.

The 332d Fighter Group (P-51s) was based at Ramitelli airfield/Italy on that date flying bomber escort for 15th AAF.

JB

The only claim made by a fighter over a Me 262 was by F/O Wesley Totten of 338 FS/55 FG who claimed one damaged in the vincinity of Prenzlau. Not neccessarily those who chased away "your" Me 262 but at least an indication.

Since there were a couple of Me 262 shot down that day, it is most probable that at least one or maybe two fell to the gunners of the Bomber stream.
