Help in tracing where a plane came down
My great uncle was killed in a raid on brunswick on the night of 14/15th January 1944. His plane was shot down and he was listed as lost in action. He was awarded a posthumous conspicuous gallantry medal and took part in over 90 operational flights.
I have no idea where his plane came down exactly and I have seen other posts on here regarding remains of planes and bones of crew members and was wondering if anybody can help point me in the right direction. as I'm sure you'll all understand, I would love to think that one day his plane and his and his other crew memebers will be found. Any help at all much appreciated. I have more info if needed. Thanks. |

I have moved your query to this section under the assumption your uncle was flying for the RAF or USAAF. It would help if you could clarify this. Any further information on him, such as name, squadron, type of aircraft, etc., would be of great help. We have many very knowledgable people on this board who can track down many arcane items, so any additional information would help. |

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
Louise,
Indeed, some more details would be welcome. I assume your relative was with the RAF because it was a night raid on Brunswick (Braunschweig). There was a thread five years ago about this particular mission on this website: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=2147 Regards, Leendert |

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
Hi tanks for your responses.
Yes you are correct he was with the RAF 7 squadron. His name was Ronald Haywood. As I said before he was on a mission to Brunswick on the night of 14th/15th January 1944. I have read that their flightpath was intercepted and that the German fighters joined their stream and once they got over German soil they were shot down. It says that they were shot down roughly around Bremen???? The plane he was on was a Lancaster JA935 and all the crew were killed. There were 2 other planes from 7 squadron that night who also suffered JA905 and JA 398. I believe that all crew were killed apart from2 on one of the other planes who were atken prisoner of war. The main problem I am having is that if you check the CWGC site, they show that Ronald and his crew were all "buried" in Hanover War cemetary. However, I have newspaper cutting sto say that he was classed as missing in action and if you check the lost lancaster archives, it states that the plane was shot down, all crew were killed but the crash site is unknown. His RAF number was 649966, hope this helps you in assisting me and I will patiently awit your responses as I am desperate to find out what happened to him. If you need any more info just ask and I will help all I can. Thank you all. |

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
Lancaster JA935 took off from Oakington, Cambs. 16.59 hrs for a raid on Braunschweig and was shot down by a night fighter around 19.10 hrs north of Waggum, what is N of Braunschweig. All were initially buried at Querum, in 1947 reinterred in the Hanover War Cemetery.

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
Thanks for that Henk, it puts my mind at rest knowing he is buried and not missing.
Do you know wether when they were initially buried in Querum, was it a mass war grave? also do you know if the plane was ever recovered?? |

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
Also, just to clarify, if he was shot down in 1944 but not buried until 1947, what happened to him in between??

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
Louise you can get a photo of Ronald Haywood's grave at the Commonwealth Graves Photographic Project. They provide very high quality pictures of most graves for a nominal fee. You can see a small version of it here: http://twgpp.org/information.php?id=2035302

Re: Help in tracing where a plane came down
What Henk said was - All were initially buried at Querum, in 1947 reinterred in the Hanover War Cemetery.
The German authorities buried them first at the town of Querum in the vicinity of the crash. The Commonwaelth War Graves Commishion in 1947 then moved their graves into the Hannover War Cemetery. As mentioned in this old thread in 2006 http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/d...D6&archive=yes Last edited by dp_burke; 20th July 2010 at 17:19. Reason: Added old link |
