Hi guys
The Australian War Memorial has a Bf 109 static display. It is listed as a G-6 but there is speculation it is a 'bitzer' (G-5,G-6 and G10). The engine is listed as a DB 605-A1, No. 78246A1. Is there any database that would confirm into which model / airframe this engine was installed? The Werk.No is listed as 163824 Here are some pics: http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/REL/16285/ Cheers |

Re: Australian War Memorial, Bf 109 G-6(?)
The plane is in fact the famous Bf 109G-6 W.Nr.163824 once preserved in the Treolar Center.
It belongs to mid-late Bf 109G-6 production by MTT, Regensburg. More info and many photographs here: http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/index215.htm Hope this helps.

Re: Australian War Memorial, Bf 109 G-6(?)
There is an extensive photo and documentary presentation of this aircraft in "Augsburg's Last Eagles" by Brett Green, published by Eagle Editions.

Re: Australian War Memorial, Bf 109 G-6(?)
During the 1970's I was a trainee technical officer (electrical) with the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in Australia. This department run and controlled all airports in Australia at the time.
Marshell Airlines were based at Bankstown and the owner absolutely hated DCA. This 109 was in their hanger and I approached the owner to inspect the aircraft. All I got was a flat no when he found out I worked for DCA. The only time I could get a look at the 109 was when I had to enter the hanger to read the electricity meters each month. The 109 was stored high up and could only be viewed from a distance. I have always regreted that I could not get a good look over the aircraft. Rick |
