Dénes Bernád will become famous soon enough
Gifhorn airfield, 1945

Which Luftwaffe training unit(s) stationed on Gifhorn airfield, in the Spring of 1945? It seems, lots of '109s of various types (including 'Emils'!) were captured there by US troops.

Re: Gifhorn airfield, 1945

Hi Dénes,

"Lots of 109s" in the Gifhorn area might point to remnants of one of the replacement JGs. According to a quick search of M.Holms site some parts of them were disbanded at places near Gifhorn (Braunschweig and Helmstedt) shortly before the war's end: II./JG 105, II./JG 107 and I./JG 110.

Maybe the planes found at Gifhorn have belonged to one or more of those units. Do you have any ID's for those planes? What's the source for your info?

Cheers,
Christian

Was it in the American zone? If so, it looks like it must have been right on the British-US forces' boundary.

Gifhorn (50 km away from Hannover) was deep in the British Zone, but during the race to the Elbe River american forces were quicker than the british ones.

Like ChristianK i would like to see photos if available ?

greets Thomas
