Help Please - Who shot down ED668

I'm currently looking into the death of my Great Uncle. At the time of his death he was a navigator on Lancasters serving with 57 Squadron based out of Scampton. On the night of the 12/13 June 1943 during a raid on Bochum he was shot down whilst flying Lancaster ED668 DX-Y.

From my research I believe that he was shot down over the North Sea at between 02:20 and 02:50 hours by one of three night fighter pilots:

Oblt Ernst-Georg Drunkler
Ofw Hermann Sommer
Uffz. Georg "Schorsch" Kraft

I would be interested if can shed any light on who shot down my great uncle down.

Best Regards,

Matt leeding

Help Please - Who shot down ED668

Hello Matt

According to the excellent and highly researched The Nachtjagd War Diaries by Theo Boiten and Rod Mackenzie the Lancaster III (ED668) "DX-Y" of 57 Sqn, RAF flown by Sgt KB Dowding was shot down by Unteroffizier Georg Kraft (14 victories, killed in action 17 August 1943) of 12./NJG 1 at 2:50 over the North Sea some 40 kilometers west of Alkmaar as his 10th victory. I hope this helps you in your quest for information regarding your great-uncle.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Help Please - Who shot down ED668

Hi Leo,

That's great news. I had over the last 15 years been able to narrow the aircraft down to three possible nightfighters. It is great to know that I was in the right ball park.

I would love to know what the exact entry in the War Diaries states, and if there was a combat report somewhere (a big ask I know!!).

Many Thanks,

Matt
