Hpt. Gustav Heckewerth

Seeking details of the career of this officer who was killed in the crash of He 177A3 6N+HK of 2/KG100, returning from raid on Portsmouth on 26/27-4-1944. Described by one of his surviving crewman in the KG100 book as an old fox.

Re: Hpt. Gustav Heckewerth

A search of our files yields only the following:

HECKEWERTH, Gustav. 21.04.44 Hptm., appt Staka 2./KG 100 (to 27.04.44). 27.04.44 KIA – aircraft hit and crashed vic Portsmouth.

A search of the Kracker Archive comes up dry.

Good luck.

Re: Hpt. Gustav Heckewerth

Doug, thanks for checking. KG 100 book says on landing approach to Chateaudun there was a problem with the Fowler flaps due to AA damage. Only one flap came down causing pilot to lose control and crash, with only the two gunners surviving injured. NVM gives crash site as 8km. S/W Cloys (Cloyes-sur-le-Loir) and Heckewerth ( no.53641/4) as b. 8-5-1915 at Leipzig.
