Luftwaffe claim 15.1.42 Demyansk

Hi

Looking for any Luftwaffe claim for an I-26 around Demyansk area on 15th Jan 1942. Looked at Tony Woods site and nothing came up.

Would it have been JG54 as the main opponent?

regards

Mark

Mark,
The only one that I found for that area and date was Stab I/JG 51 StA. Dr. Veit Vogel for his 5th victory a SB-2 at 11:05. I/JG 51 was stationed there. II/JG 54 came around the 20th. It could have been someones "unconfirmed victory" unless Vogel was really bad at aircraft ID.

Hi Nokose,

Thanks for that. I think most will agree there is no similarity between a I-26 and a SB-2.

Keep on looking ,especially at JG51.

Mark

Re: Luftwaffe claim 15.1.42 Demyansk

Gentlemen

Can we please drop the -2 in the Tupolev design?
The aircraft was Tupolev SB, the digit 2 refers to the engines used, so it is either SB or SB-2M 100, SB-2M 103 and so on, but never SB-2 since it indicates there was a previous type designated SB-1 which of course there was not.

Cheers
Stig

Stig, I usually put SB if I know the unit and pilot but when all I have is the German type designated as "SB-2" that's what I put down. I have ran across a lot of "SB-2" instead of being a SB have turned into DB-3 or DB-3F bombers. It's like a LaGG being classified as all Soviet fighters which we know isn't true.
