Günther Schulze-Blanck

Gentlemen,

I have before me a report from a former member of the Stabskompanie of II./JG 53 who states that Oblt. Günther Schulze-Blanck, Staffelkapitän of 4./JG 53, on September 9th, 1940, was shot down by a Bf 110 of ZG 26 - like he put it that the the not too terribly well liked Staffelkapitän was stung by a wasp.

I have no information and no reason to substantiate this account - does anybody out there know more ? As usual, any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Jochen Prien

Re: Günther Schulze-Blanck

Hi, Jochen.

The loss record states 'Von Jägern abgeschossen' as you probably have noticed yourself. This could of course be German fighters...

I believe the only way to confirm it would be if the wreck was investigated and the damage noted as being from ammunitions not used by the RAF.

Do not have my library handy at the moment, maybe Peter Cornwell has something on this?

Regards,
Andreas B

Re: Günther Schulze-Blanck

Wasp....Wespengeschwader was however ZG 1, IMHO....not ZG 26. So I am bit confused by Jochens text..._

Re: Günther Schulze-Blanck

Hi.

As I saw the message that he was shot down into the sea any possbility of shedding more light on this topic is very slight - if no evidence can be found in contemporary records from the opposing force. RAF logbooks or similar.

Andreas B

Re: Günther Schulze-Blanck

Hi,

according to two log books from I./ZG26 and II./ZG26 Bf110s from those units were in action over Britain between 17.30-19.00 escorting bombers to London.

Regards

Robert

Re: Günther Schulze-Blanck

Hello all,

Found in my old files (BAMA RL 10/585 NVM II./JG 53) some notes: 9.9.40 4./JG 53 Oblt Günther Schulze - Blanck, Staffelkap., "Feindflug Hastings Gegend. Gemeinde Marck arr. Boulogne/Calais." Later additional data: "Kabinenschuß, leicht verletzt." ??? My data might be incomplete.

Best regards,
Rob
