Perhaps the attachment maybe of interest. The date on the press release is 11/16/42. The location is given as a "recently captured Axis airfield somewhere on the Egyptian desert."

Jochen Prien, in his 'JG 77' history, did list many captured/abandoned 109s from the Mediterranean theater. These are from Allied intel reports I think, but since Prien's focus in his books was of the 109, only these types were listed. I haven't seen these reports from the Med, but do have many others from France and Germany from 44-45. If the Med reports are anything like the 44-45 stuff, I suspect there is much more interesting information to be delved from these by the Lw enthusiast community. I've been trying to find a source for these for several years with no luck so far. Jim P.

Maybe could be visit and explore sites of the former bases? If some material was not transported or scraped, maybe something is still under sand.

You will find a wealth of information in NA AIR 40/2158 for aircraft found in Tunisia, there is also information for Comiso in NA AIR 40/2159 and Sardinia in NA AIR 40/2160

There may be more files out there, but these are the only ones I have seen.
