Flanders soil reveals 65 year old secret ME-110

Good evening gents

Our organisation has recoverd a ME-110 last week in Assenede, East-Flanders Belgium.

We knew there was "something" in the ground in a farmers field after years of prospecting, research and deep scanning for any foreign objects. The scanner went totally nuts at one point and pointed out that there was someting at a depth of 6 meters

Eyewitnesses had seen an aircraft coming down in 1943. The crew were able to leave the aircraft uninjured by parachute before the plane hit the dirt.

In co-operation with the gouvernement we got a green light yesterday to see wat was in the ground. We are one of the sole organisations that have a permit under the Belgian law to excavate WW2 airplanes.The weather was fairly good so we had a go at it.

I would like to share the result of determination and patience of the BAHAAT crew.

The crash-site

Lots of bits and pieces

Oxigen bottles

20 mm cannons bended Mg 17

the other MG17

Well that's wat it looked like originally

2 Daimler Benz 601 engines as used in a ME110

Text on one of the oleostruts

Wheel and oleostrut of the main gear

Props

Hispano 20 mm canons

1 of the main gears and the tailwheelassemble

Notice the black painted part from one of the rudders or fin, Swastika?

One of the engines is severely damaged, could be an indication that one side of the plane hit the ground first. The other engine is in far better condition

Well it's dirty work but somebody's got do do it

There are lot of other artifacts but thats it for now. The parts wil be displayed in the For Freedommuseum, Knokke Belgium

www.forfreedommuseum.be (dutch only for the moment but take the virtual tour!)

www.bahaat.be for all other planes we have salvaged.

A little coverage from a local TV station

http://museumforfreedom.be/AVSjournaal.mpg

Dutch only (sorry guys)

Cheers

Stevo

As you live in Canada it might be interesting to know that BAHAAT provided the main landinggear for a restauration project in Canada of a Halifax bomber for static display. The gear was yet again found after a crash by our organisation. The full story behind the Halifax bomber can be found on our website. (in English). After restauration it will be the sole Halifax in the world to my knowledge. The fuselage and wingsection were found in a Norwegian lake by a Canadian with Norwegian roots.

@ClinA

No comments on that one. I leave that over to our "very capable" politicians in Brussels.....

@David

In the near future the For Freedom site wil be in English too but as I am the webmaster I find myself having to much work and to little time but that probably sounds familiar.....

Stevo,

There is a complete Halifax in England that was recovered in the 1970's and it is on display, I believe at Hendon. There's also the 'Friday 13th' composite as well.

Hello Steve,

I provide also a tiny part (coming from LV831 or MZ295?)...of a landing gear to the Trenton Halifax...
Congratulation for your recovery.

Best regards

ClinA-78

PS Walloon soil reveals also some treasure... (more would follow...)

Thanks for the info Stephen

@ClinA

The one we found was LW682 ((426sqn) and your spot on, the parts went to Karl Kjarsgaard who was indeed working on it in Trenton Canada. We came in contact with him via an article in flypast magazine.

Do you have any details of the date, unit, crew etc?

I have found a Bf 110 G-2 down at Assenede during 1943 and wonder if this is the same aircraft?

There must be a Werke Nummer amongst all that wreckage, somewhere!

PS - W.Nr 6160? 2./NJG 4?
