Burnt Out Wellington

I have just obtained 2 photos showing the burn out remains of a Wellington on a German-held airfield in NW Europe. No clues apart from it has landed with undercarriage down and all that remains is the tail and two engines (both without damage to the props). Any ideas anyone?

Hello ,

Wellington R-1215 from N° 304 squadron made a landing due to fuel shortage on the airfield of St-Trond in Belgium during the night of 7 april 1941. At that time St-Trond was the homebase of II GRuppe NJG 1. The crew was able to put the aircraft on fire and was taken POW.

Re: Burnt Out Wellington

Alain: That was quick. Looks like a distinct possibility as the aircraft has run off the end of the runway

There is a picture of this Welington in "The Defense of the Reich:Hitler's Nightfighter" by Werner Held on page 173.

Re: Burnt Out Wellington

If it shows one engine pointing upwards and the other lying on the ground, it is the same

Re: Burnt Out Wellington

Chris ,

This photo is the Wellington at St-Trond airfield. Some years ago i was in contact with the pilot and co-pilot and they identified the airplane as theirs.
