this was fitted on a HE111, but what for ?

Good evening,
this strange part is around 30 cm long, it looks like a machine gun barrel but it is not one (I checked with a weapon expert).
It has a spring at one end , and it has cooling holes on the main cylinder. Material is not aluminium but strong heavy metal.
I suppose it might be from landing gear but I am not sure.
(This part comes from a HE111BB which was flying in 1939 with the Legion Condor).
