Do.217 Part No.?

A flat piece of aluminium (?) retreived from a Do217 crash site has the numbers 217.522 stamped on it. Anyone know what part of the aircraft it is/was?

Re: Do.217 Part No.?

Generally speaking .5xx is for main wing ´parts´ (i.e. components / Drawing numbers). Each individual part whould then be 217.5xx-xx

Re: Do.217 Part No.?

Was the .5xx number generic to all Luftwaffe aircraft, for example, Dornier, Junkers, Heinkel etc or were they different depending on the manufacturer.

Re: Do.217 Part No.?

This, I belive, was some sort of general system in use for all aircraft and gliders also. xxx.10 for all fuselages or fuselage halves, xxx.3x (or xxx.3xxx) for control surfaces, xxx.5x (or xx.5x) for mainplanes, xxx.6x for engine cowlings etc., i.e. numbering from 10 to 99 for larger components but f.e. Junkers added third letter on all major components.

I have example of this Gerneral Drawing / Components System from a book called ´Werkstatt Praxis´ published both before and after the war, system then was general but parts numbering may have variations from one factory to another. Parts lists for each type are of course what one should look for regarding exact numbers.

Same part xx.5xx second and third letters after dot (or space), were likely different numbers depending on version and perhaps factories also. I have in my hand one part from Ju 88 D-5 W.Nr. 0880430087 - namely (Sch) 8-88 133-0902. This is the aluminium part of canopy-frame around the pilot window (and number is stamped directly into the aluminium on the side then covered with Green camouflage paint) but also falls into the same generic system (here 8 stands for aircraft, 88 for type, 13 for fuselage part etc..

cheers,
ed

Your picture looks like an engine mount, where it attaches to the firewall.
