Do 17M/P tail gunner's compartment

Hello,

I would like to ask about canopy above Do 17P/M tail gunner's compartment. Was it possible to jettison (or at least open) it? In case of emergency landing on water I just can't imagine any other way of leaving the plane.

Regards,
R

Hi, Recceswind

it was possible to take away this canopy. Scroll down in this page and find the detail-picture of canopy where is written "Abwurfbetätigung".

Thanks JohnnyB! I'm especially interested in Do 17M/P version but your info also helps me.

The attached photo is from a Do -17P T1+El taken on 28/7/40. Perhaps it might be of help.

Re: Do 17M/P tail gunner's compartment

It would seem that the cover was hinged on the left side with a release latch on the right.

Re: Do 17M/P tail gunner's compartment

Very nice pictures! Great thanks!

BTW: Pilot on the photo of chuckschmitz is wearing a standard Luftwaffe uniform; observer is wearing a flight suit. Was there any rule, that pilots had to wear uniforms and the rest of the crew - flight suits? I am asking about that, because I have seen several photos with German bomber pilots in uniforms and gunners/observers/bomb aimers (from the same crew!) in flight suits.
