Re: KG40 November 43

Remi,

21 Aircraft set off to attack convoy KMF 26 as it passed Cape Bougie on the Algerian coast. One aircraft suffered a broken crankshaft and was burnt out in the subsequent crash landing.
When they reached the convoy AA fire was intense.
Fighter cover for the convoy consisted of Sprifires of GC 1/7, P-39s of USAAF 350th FS and Beaufighters of 513 Sqdn RAF.
According to the write up in Profile No 234 these fighters accounted for 6 He 177s including those of Major Mons and Hptm Nuss.
Two more He 177s were wrecked on landing due to the weather conditions at their base - these crews survived (?).
II./KG 40 obtained at least one hit on Rohna, a troop carrying liner, which sank. nearly 1000 US servicemen perished.

Griehl/Dressel p130 quotes a similar situation but also indicates that the He 177s claimed a destoyer and two frigates together with 10 allied fighters (3 by the crew of Hptm Eidhoff)

Mons - F8+DX - 535677
Nuss - F8+BP - 535684
Hope that this helps.

Remi,

As I have a passing interest in KG 40 - yes the loss details would be interesting.

I look forward to the 122 losses and Fuhrtjohann's log.

many thanks
