USAAF Target Classification

Hey,
I am researching the activities of 15th USAAF over Austria, and wondering if the Americans also had a specific target classification like the germans had.

The german system was based on numbers, which classified the type of target (airfield, harbour, industry,...) and an ongoing number - so each target had it´s number.

How did the Americans specify their targets?
city + installation?

Any help would be great

thanks
Harry
