KG 51 Junkers 88 footage 1940-41 (90minutes)

Hi all,

Below is a url linking to 90 minutes of extraordinary home movie footage taken of the KG 51 Ju 88 force dated around 1940-41. This will be of interest to any Luftwaffe aficionados as it is unedited film of all aspects of the day to day running of this bomber wing. Of note are many shots showing servicing, crash landings, bombing up, dummy bombing runs and air to air footage alongside parades and the often overlooked general boredom of men inbetween sorties.

I hope it is of interest

Just copy and paste this into a browser and maximise the window.

Note early (April 1941) use of front nose MG FF on Ju 88A-5.

II/KG 30 Colour home movie - Aalborg May 1940

Hi all,

Another gem here in the form of a home movie which was shot around May 1940 of the II/KG 30 in what is believed to be Aalborg in Denmark.

The film is worth watching throughout as it shows very good quality Kodachrome film of the Ju88 force which begins at around 4 minutes. I guess they were in action at this time on possible anti-shipping ops as the crew are wearing yellow skull caps. You guys will know more I am sure.

Also featured is Werner Baumbach receiving a Knights Cross. I believe he was killed in 1953, ironically delivering an Avro Lancater to the Argentine air force.

The town shown at first is Aalborg Denmark. I'm not sure that the award ceremony is from Aalborg.

Re: II/KG 30 Colour home movie - Aalborg May 1940

The Ju88s appear to be A-1s from II./KG30, which would put them in the first half of 1940 and probably at Barth, Westerland or Oldenburg. The A-1s were probably replaced with A-5s in mid-1940. It'ds difficult to say for sure, but the one taking off from left to right at 1:18:56 appears to be an A-5 (longer, pointier wing).
Baumbach was awarded his RK in May 1940, and the video of him receiving it appears before the Ju88s. Does anyone know when he received it? Is there any information to suggest the video clips are in chronological order?
Peter

Baumbach recieved his EK1 on the 4th of May and the Ritterkreuz on the 8th of May, 1940. Both times at Oldenburg where his unit had arrived on the 1st or 2nd of May.

No Ju 88 A-5s are in this film. One "appears" be A-5 but just has aileron "up" (plane was taxiing) but aileron hinge is there, at the very tip, giving it away as A-1 also. I think all of film be shot in May/June period. A-5s only reaching front in late July/August 40.
