Hi,
I found an interesting couple of newspaper articles from The Mercury (Hobart - 14 Nov 39) and Examiner (Launceston - 21 Jun 1941). Both mention Sgt Lewis Samares Dumaresq (Australian in the RAF - No.905759), however, the 1941 article details his flying in one of the gifted Spitfires named “Tasmania II” (Mk.IIA, P8182). The text goes on to mention Dumaresq had flown in bomber and fighter planes since Oct 39 and was moving to a night fighter squadron. In a letter to his father, Lewis, “mentioned that his squadron in one month had shot down nine enemy planes”.

I cannot find much information regarding the service of Dumaresq apart from an AFC gazetted late in the war (surname incorrectly listed as Dimaresq and awarded for services as test pilot) and an undigitised service file on the NAA website. He is also given the surname of Dumbresq in First Impact by Newton.
Spitfire P8182 was lost with 152 Sqn RAF during Jun 41, however, his name does not appear to be in the ORB. According to the Spitfire production list “Tasmania II” was with 8 MU and 118 Sqn RAF. Can anyone confirm whether this airman served with either of these two units or provide any details about his wartime service including with a possible night fighter unit? The article from 1939 gives the impression he may have been an instructor?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Regards, Drew
