Re: Spitfires on the beach
I believe the first one shows a Rotol prop and has been discussed on other forums - perhaps the Flypast one is the best to try.

Re: Spitfires on the beach
Kaki,
I've got other photos of the third one, which was well-photographed, but is so far unidentified, at least by the EOE Working Group. Other photos show that the underside of the port wing is black with the roundel at the extreme tip. The ID markings are pretty well burned off the wreckage, but I'm still hoping that someone will be able to ID this one. Regards, |

Re: Spitfires on the beach
Kaki,
Your first one appears to be 54 SQ Spitfire N3180, KLoB KIWI of PO Alan C Deere down on beach at de Panne, between Nieuport and Ostend Belgium, on May 28, 1940. This wreck was well photographed. I've got about a dozen different views of it in the EOE DB. Regards, |

Re: Spitfires on the beach
Larry et al,
Thanks for the information. It woud be great to identify the third one which shows one wheel down and a burned mid section. It looks like the ammunition was salvaged. I'm going through my copy of Air Battle Dunkirk to see if I can narrow down some of the candidates. I also have a 5-6 pictures of N3200 of 19 Sq, lost on May 26,1940. I have seen some other pictures of crash landed Spitfires. |

Re: Spitfires on the beach
Kaki,
We have 52 photos of force-landed Spits, many partially burned out, on French-Belgium beaches from the Dunkirk period in our EOE photo data base. There may be as many as a dozen different FL represented, of which about 6-7 are reasonably well identified: Deere, Stephenson, Cazenove, Hart and possibly Morant (ZDoU?, P9377), and Learmond (GRoM? P9370?). One I'm particularly interested in confirming is YToK, probably P/O T. Smart of 65 SQ in P9435 FL on May 28, 1940. Have one photo of this aircraft with reasonably clear codes and the cockpit burned out--fired by pilot--but don't have a really good photo yet of the SN, which would nail this one. Does anyone have a photo of YToK showing this? Regards, |
