Re: Loss date S1+BK of 2./StG 76?

Thanks Robert,
but can it be excluded that this particular plane was lost during the Polish campaign? I am asking because of the 1939 marking style, the un-modified exhaust stacks and because other photos of S1+BK suggest a date later in the year than May...

Are there any known photos of StG 76-Stukas that were definitely taken in August/September 1939?

Regards,
Christian

Hello,

Several photos of this a/c have appeared on eBay, and one of them had the caption hand-written on the back, "Bellevaux, Belgium." Both Jochen Prien and Peter Taghon have verified this location from the handwriting, and confirmed this as the location of an airfield. This likely matches losses reported by the unit on either 12 or, as Robert says, on 14 May 1940. We have many photos of I./StG76 Stukas in our EOE DB, and this unit does not appear to have updated the fuselage crosses and swasticas used on their a/c during 1939 by the time of the WC of 1940, although later assigned a/c were properly marked for their time period.

Regards,

Regards,

Thanks Larry for this valuable info! One question though: Do any of your photos show whether I./StG 76 used the narrow Balkenkreuz/aircraft letter marking system on the wing upper- and undersides in 1939, like the other Lw units did during this period?

Hi,

for sure they used underwing small crosses with small aircraft letters - it`s impossible to say if the letters were in "Staffelsfarbe". I have one photo showing upperside of the wing - no crosses but aircraft`s letter was painted (this was 1st staffel a/c). They also used to paint propeller`s tip (all staffel) with staffel`s color.

Regards

Robert
