ID: Do-217, KG2, Bolam, Northumberland UK May 1st 1942

Hello everyone

This is going to be a long shot, but can anyone help me with an ID for the KG2 Do-217 that jettisoned its bombs while lost in cloud over Bolam in Northumberland, on Friday 1st May 1942 at around 04.00? One of the bombs ended up in the chancel of Bolam Church, and was disarmed.

The pilot was Fw Willi Schludecker, who visited the church back in 2004. It was widely reported in the local media at the time.

Regards

Simon

Simon,
Do217E-2 U5+FP 6./KG2. I don't have the Werknummer - it isn't in Willi's Flugbuch. Incidentally, Willi jettisoned his bombs at c. ten(!) metres above ground level just after clipping tree tops and while being chased by a Beaufighter. An article of mine tells the tale in FlyPast magzine, December 2004. Bill Norman (www.billnorman.co.uk)

Top stuff Bill - very much appreciated. I'll see if I can get hold of a copy of that issue of Flypast.

I live about 3 miles from Bolam, so I'll have a toddle up there in the next few days to see the Church's window marking the event.

Regards

Simon

Send me your postal address (by PM, if you like) and I'll send you a photocopy of the article. Bill

Thanks for the very kind offer Bill, but as soon as I saw your reply I bought a copy of the magazine off Ebay. I was too quick off the mark!

I'm looking forward to seeing the article very much.

Regards

Simon
