Barkhorn flight training location?
Hello All,
In listening to our Franz Stigler (JG 27/JV 44) interviews, he mentions that one of his students, when he was instructing at B2 school, was Gerhard Barkhorn. From what I can gather, this may have taken place at the Military Air Academy of the Luftwaffe in Dresden. Has any one ever come across any records showing where Barkhorn received his various flight training? Thanks! Bryan |

Re: Barkhorn flight training location?
Hello Bryan,
When would it suppossedly take place? Gerd Barkhorn started his combat career quite early, in August 1940. Later, certainly, he flew at the Eastern Front while Stigler was accupied in Africa. Besides, let's remember Stigler was member of famous "Schwarm of Liars" (from 4./JG 27) which falsified with premeditation victory claims in August 1942. So his credibility is problematic. I might be wrong but I doubt it can be truth. Regards, Nef |

Re: Barkhorn flight training location?
Hi Nef,
Franz was instructing from the late 1930s through when he was posted to JG 27 in North Africa in winter 1942 so I have no doubt that he's telling the truth. Plus, he even had his pre-war logbook that had several entries for Barkhorn, I just can't find my photo of it hence the question about the location of the training school. In regards to the "Schwarm of Liars" - we'll be shedding some new light on this "scandal" in Franz's biography due out next year however in short - Christopher Shores did not have access to all the British records when he wrote "Fighters Over the Desert" which resulted in a limited account of what actually happened. Best! Bryan |
