Sqn. Ldr. Humphreys (RAF Intelligence)

This officer's name crops up in R.V Jones's "Most Secret War" and in files of the Government Code & Cipher School (Bletchley Park). Can anyone tell me his full name and the position he held?

Thanks.

Re: Sqn. Ldr. Humphreys (RAF Intelligence)

Nick,

Possibly Robert Humphreys, described as chief air advisor, although rank of Group Captain is mentioned. This was in 1940-42.

But there were some more at BP with the name Humphreys. See http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/reso.../591876/hi.pdf

Regards,

Leendert

Re: Sqn. Ldr. Humphreys (RAF Intelligence)

A strong possibility for this would be S/L W.E.G. "Bill" Humphrey OBE DFC & Bar. He flew with 105 Squadron using Oboe and was also involved in Oboe development & testing with 8 Group which R.V. Jones was very much involved with. Humphrey flew 103 operations with Bomber Command.

Re: Sqn. Ldr. Humphreys (RAF Intelligence)

Thanks everybody. I had a GC&CS staff list for 2 December 1940 (from National Archives HW14/9) and the only Humphreys was a "Mr.", not an RAF officer. See attached extract (the "S.H." in the right-hand column stands for "School" by the way).
