Crashed Fw200

Hi

On eBay here there is a press photo of a crashed Fw200. The text on the rear reads;
German plane crashes in Portugal
…The wreck of the German plane which crashed in Portugal with soldiers and officials …17th May 1941.
I have found these three Fw200 crashes in Portugal.
09-02-1941 Focke-Wulf FW 200 C1 W.Nr.0003
15-06-1941 Focke-Wulf FW 200 C3 W.Nr.006
19-12-1941 Focke-Wulf FW 200 C3 W.Nr.0863
However none of the dates match the press photo. The note that the Fw200 carried ‘soldiers and officials’ is also interesting. This would suggest it was not a normal KG 40 offensive maritime mission. Is there any information on this?

cheers
Ian

Re: Crashed Fw200

Thanks, the eBay photo certainly matches that shown on the link for the 09/02/1941, so the British press release appears erroneous.

Re: Crashed Fw200

It is recorded here and here that;
8 Feb 1941. The (U-37) boat spotted the convoy HG 53 late on Feb 8, 1941. She attacked on the 9th and sank 3 ships during the next 2 days but she also brought in Condor aircraft from 2/KG 40 which attacked on the 9th that sank 5 more ships. The heavy cruiser Hipper is also vectored in to the scene but only finds a straggler on the 11th, sinking her.

9 Feb 1941
HMS Deptford (Lt.Cdr. G.A. Thring, DSO, RN) picks up 26 survivors from the British merchants Couland and Estrellano that were torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-37 about 160 nautical miles south-west of Cape St. Vincent, Portugal in position 35º53'N, 13º13'W. One of them died of wounds and was buried at sea the next day.

regards
Ian
