Re: Strange emblem

Have not looked through my own photos yet, but it is in Ketley and Rolfe #683. It is however noted as unknown and found on a Ju88D

Re: Strange emblem

In an old booklet from Squadron/Signal/Podzun Pallas booklet of 1975 this picture was published with the caption (hopefully i somehow correct translate it from German to English): "Even it is unsure, one presumes that this badge shows a stylized emblem of KG 30..."
By crosschecking Ketley and Rolfe as well, i would assume that this emblem merely shows the stylized eagle emblem of KG 53, because the outlook of the bird's head comes more closer to that.
Anyone for a topspin return?

Re: Strange emblem

The eagle is such a common element of Luftwaffe emblems that I see no particularly good reason to attribute it to KG30. It could be KG30 or 53, but could be a version of a number of different emblems or most likely an emblem of a unit not as yet determined. If indeed this is a Ju88D, then it is most likely to be a Aufkl.Gr. unit

Re: Strange emblem

If you compare the photo in the link to that in Squadron Signal No 1016 page 39 you will see that the Squadron Signal photo is a crop of the same shot albiet not as clear.

Re: Strange emblem

It looks like a stylized emblem of FFS A/B 24...

Re: Strange emblem

Strangely enough, the emblem reminds me more of a fake unit, such as those fantasy ones used by the "He 113".

Are any fake Luftwaffe bomber units known as well from that period?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Strange emblem

No clue here regarding unit. Version is "Recce", but not a proper "D", rather A-1/F or A-5/F (Recce). Officially Ju88s with cameras in rear bomb bay (windows for these are visible on this photo) were not such. The D-2 and D-1 are stated for them carrying cameras AFT of the rear bay. However (many) A-1 F and A-5 F are stated D-2s in GQM losses, werether that is correct or not. Possibly Schule or Ausbildung-Staffel ??
