Fw. Joachim Steinkamp, III./JG 54, 1944-45

Hallo,

Could anyone please tell me anything about this fighter pilot ? He claimed two aerial victories on 29 December 1944 against 401 Squadron RCAF. I have Axel Urbanke's magnificent 'GREEN HEARTS - first in combat with the Dora 9'. From this I know Steinkamp flew in Normandy and survived the war.

Specifically were the above two victories his only aerial claims during World War 2 ?

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.

He made at least two more claims on Eastern front:

26.3.1944 Uffz. Hans-Joachim Steinkamp 2./JG 54 Jak-9 70 824: 50 m. 08:07
30.3.1944 Uffz. Hans-Joachim Steinkamp 2./JG 54 La-5 70 31 Mitte: 2000 m. 08:46

He was WIA on 6.7.1944 in Luftkampf near Beaumont (FW 190A-8 W.Nr. 731086, 2./JG 54, reported as 100% loss). Shot down and taken POW on 29.12.1944 (near Hulst, 12./JG 54, FW 190D-9 W.Nr. 210028 StKz. TS+DB, 100% loss).
