Kurt Ubben

Greetings all,

any image of Kurt Ubben Bf109E-1 with witch painted on side? Did it have it in the moment when he claimed D.XXI? I am afraid that Internet serach did not give any images but plastic kits and simulation screen capture, no archive images...

Cheers

Re: Kurt Ubben

I have a photo of Ubbens's Yellow/Brown 13 but not sure if he shot down a Fokker with it. Photo from Sitzkrieg Dr Prien Teil 2 Sitzkeig 01-09-39 to 09-05-40:

Re: Kurt Ubben

Photo of yellow 13 appears in the JFV series, Vol. 2, page 493, with the witch emblem. The same aircraft, without witch emblem (but with the added "white 5") appears in Vol.3, page 36.

The text, from Google translation, "the witch on a broom, was apparently in most machines use at the beginning of the use of Norway over painted".

That said, the witch would likely have been present in Holland.

Re: Kurt Ubben

The problem is Google translate.
So in contrast to what the Google translation suggests, the witch on a broomstick image was removed prior to the campaign in the west.
Pictures of the unit in Norway before they participated in the attack on The Netherlands show the image of the witch already removed and replaced by additional white numbers.
This is then likely the look they had during the attack on Holland and the fights with the D21's.
There is also no photographic evidence of crashlanded a/c with this image from those days.

Regards, Pieter

Re: Kurt Ubben

Hi Srecko

Nicely done, very faithful to the photo! Pieter, I believe is correct, I have no photos of the unit with the witch emblem during the western campaign.

Blessings

Chris
