Ju 88 L4+AK

Hello,
I'm looking for the serial of the Ju88 coded L4+AK saw on Bricy Luftwaffe Base in 1940 or 1941.
Regards
Franck

Re: Ju 88 L4+AK

The photo shows a Ju 88 of I/Lehrgeschwader 1 ( Griffin on nose ) and the K means it belongs to the 2nd Staffel . The difficult bit is that that the code is not unique to one aircraft as one L1+AK was lost its replacement would have the same code. The I/LG 1 operated from Bricy between July 1940 and Jan. 1941 however full aircraft aircraft codes do not always appear in records, the unit history shows the following 2/LG 1 losses:-

12-8-40 wn and code not known crashed at Bricy 3 injured 1 killed
4-9-1940 L1+AK wn 4034 40% damaged following enemy fire at Dinard

However both these are Ju88s A-1s while the photos showing the starboard wingtip appears to be the rounded tip of an A-5 but I am not certain on this. There is wn 4141 an A-5 shown with no code and just I/Gr which crashed at Clermont on 4-12-40.

There are other losses to the Ist Gruppe where the staffel is not shown, so the identity of this aircraft cannot be definitely stated on the photos alone,

Re: Ju 88 L4+AK

Hello Brian
Thank's a lot for this information.
I think that this L1+AK is the Wrk. num 4034 because this picture seems to have been shot in the end of summer 40.
if I find more information, I will reply..
Regards
Franck

Re: Ju 88 L4+AK

Hello Franck, the only thing is looking at the fuselage photo the aileron looks like it is squared off and this aircraft has the extended wing tip of the A-5. With an A-1 with the shorter wing the aileron formed part of the wing tip and was swept back if this is the case I would have thought that your photo is for a possible replacement for Ju88 A-1 L1+AK damaged on the 4-9-40. The photo may indicate a later period than September but hard to be definite. Unfortunately as I said the records do not show the fuselage codes for many of the losses in the period making an identification difficult,

Re: Ju 88 L4+AK

From the rear armament an A-1 which puts 4034 back in the running,

Re: Ju 88 L4+AK

Hi Brian. This particular photo (abowe) was part of album lot marked April 1941 - sold on eBay a little while ago - and indeed is Ju 88 A-5 (longer wings), althoug photo may have been taken a little earlier than April, I think, but this plane may have been an A-1 version earlier.

The I/LG 1 moved to Bulgaria for the Yugoslavia/Greece campaign (therefore possibly seen at Orleans/Bricy before April 1941 but may also have moved out from there in April, after possible repair/overhaul - as right engine "Power egg" seems having new and fresh paint) and them two drop tanks suggest a long ferry (eastwards). But this is not facts, just what I think, based on some checks, looking for L1+AK, some weeks ago.

best regards
Ed

Re: Ju 88 L4+AK

Hi Ed, Thanks for that, I thought A-5 from the wing but was not certain, then the last photo with the single m.g. put me back to an A-1. Probaly as you say an A-1 repaired to part A-5 standard, it would be a coincidence if it was 4034 damaged 40% on 4-9-40,

All the Best,

Brian Bines
