FW-190 with tail booster rocket?
Just started reading a memoir by a PR Mosquito pilot of 544 Sq,"Focus on Europe" by Ronald Foster.
On a mission on April 8,1944 over Magdeburg he was intercepted by a FW-190 that " ...shooting up nearly vertically,to be in the classic position of about 500 feet above our tail! Shooting up? Yes, like a rocket ! This was a FW-190 equipped with a tail booster rocket probably fired by some derivative of nitrous oxide ...I had never met anyone who had encountred this invention, but had read about it in Air Ministry circulars...Our opponent had utilized his advantage perfectly and the sight of the Focke Wulf thick black plume of fumes pouring out behind him reminded me of the devil's tail." Anyone ever heard so such a thing? Or did the Mosquito pilot just see the black plume of an overworked BMW 801 engine? what unit was this? |
