Ju 88 nose?

Hello,

Those parts are said coming from a Ju 88. They were found where an alleged Ju-88 crashed : http://www.aircrewremembrancesociety...4/Florian.html

For sure, this comes from a german aircraft but I couldn't recognize it as a Ju 88 G-6.
It seems to be a nose (or a engine nacelle tip?) with attaches and perhaps a hole for a weapon... I am quite lost as this piece has a kind of 'shark' section compared to a more 'rounded' Ju 88 nose.
The horseshoe-like ferrous part may be the base for an radar antenna but where are the others?
The G-6 hasn't machine-guns through the nose compared to C variants.
Approx dimensions: width 100cm, height : 75 cm, length : 85cm.
There is also a panel which comes from the same crash location.

I guess for restoration specialist, this trick should be easy meat...

Could you ID those parts please?

Best regards

Re: Ju 88 nose?

Just a wild guess, the only Ju 88s with two nose gun ports ( and that is what it looks like to me) were the Ju 88 G-0s 1n the W.Nr. range 700001 to perhaps 700010. The only photos I know of are Ju 88 V58 showing the two guns and a Lichtenstein BC array, not the SN-2 of the G-1s.

Best regards,
Artie Bob

Re: Ju 88 nose?

More than this two. Ju 88 C-6 nose fitted well to G-1 and G-6 too, and extra gun ports simply faired over. Look, 620180 is very early G-6 and Ju 88 C-6 / R-2 was only just out of production then. Using older parts from stock (or salvaged) seems quite logic. There is photograpic proof of this.

Re: Ju 88 nose?

Thanks for your attention.

So can you confirm this is a Ju 88 G-6 with an 'early' nose such as seen on a C/R variant?
Why are there only two holes for weapons as those early variants were equipped with 4 MG 17's, offset to the right? Where are the others antennae fairings?
Is the oval hatch usual for a Ju 88 nose?

Re: Ju 88 nose?

Yes and no. More variations has to be considered. Upon better checking version looks more like Ju 88 G-1 (early) as stated in some books (see in Brian Filley, Ju 88 in Action, Squadron No.113) but this I referred to (in post before) had four ports faired smooth.

"So can you confirm this is a Ju 88 G-6 with an 'early' nose such as seen on a C/R variant?" No, as in the meaning this (as G-6 version) had actual weapons in them like the C-6 / R-2.

No, as it seems lacking two gun holes (if I intrepret the photos correctly) but quick release attachents (for whole nose cone) are there, and cut-outs for SN-2 antenna supports - but one hole (on top center? if that is "a hole" as it has some sort of Ferros (Fe = Iron) attachment plate too) I am not able tell what was for.

Other possibility is that one or two extra weapons had been installed (or options for them retained also for the G-6) or cone actually coming from Ju 88 G-1 (early) or G-1 parts stock..

But on other hand, do we have real reason for doupt this can have not come from the Ju 88 G-6 620180 as stated?

I think this may not be the ultimate answer. Ah, so much to learn..

Re: Ju 88 nose?

Thanks for your explanation.

Sure, this part is related to the Ju 88 investigated in Lorcé by Melvin Brownless. Perhaps Melvin can confirm the place where he found bits and walked with the German vet?

Re: Ju 88 nose?

Hi Clint & Ed,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you regarding this thread. Firstly I have not visited the crash site of the Ju 88, the documentation used on our website came to me via Walter Klaeser back in 1995. Would you like me to send you both, by e-mail my file regarding my research?

Kind regards to you both,

Melvin

Re: Ju 88 nose?

Hello Melvin,

Sure, especially if you have the pinpointed crashsite as I know the place where 'my' pieces were found, near Lorcé, so I can match them.
As this Ju 88 was claimed by a 422nd NFS P-61 (based here in A-78), those artefacts would be displayed for the forthcoming Florennes Airshow the next weekend!

Thanks for sharing your info's
