Hi Klaus !
At a different website there was the idea that it was a canadian pilot, but this question was never answered there.
Chances are very slim, but if the pilot should have been killed in action AND he was canadian AND he was not member of a bomber unit AND all this happened on 16. March 1945 then it could be one of the following:

surname,forename,initials,age_text,honours_awards, date_of_death,date_of_death2,rank,regiment,unitshi psquadron,country,servicenumberExport,cemeterymemo rial,gravereference,additionalinformation

Re: P-47, 44-20864, crash at 16 March 1945

Hans,

The 8th & 9th AF cumulative loss list for March 1945 gives 44-20864 lost on 16 March 1945 due to Flak. Unit was 86th FG. Salvage date also 16 March 1945.

Perhaps the FG gives you something to look further?

Good link is
http://www.86fighterbombergroup.com/ which has the full war diaries of the squadrons.

You may be interested to read page 293 of the 527th FBS diaries. It mentions two losses on 16 March 1945.

1st Lt Paul E. Crowell - KIA - hit by Flak 10 mi NE of Karlsruhe
1st Lt Leland P. Lewis - MIA - hit by Flak 12 mi NE of Kaiserslautern.

Please go thru the other (too many for me right now!) reports to see if more losses are mentioned that may match the P-47 you're after.

Regards,

Leendert

Leendert

Re: P-47, 44-20864, crash at 16 March 1945

Klaus,

Lt Leland Lewis was taken prisoner.
Lt Crowell was from Pennsylvania.

On page 300 of the 527th FBS war diaries you can read the circumstances of their loss on 16 March 1945.
Not sure yet if one of these pilots was flying "your" P-47.

Regards,

Leendert

(Hans in my previous post a case of mistaken identity.!)

Hi Klaus !

No, no more information, possibly also those are
bomber crew in the end (?).

To find non-US allied KIA you can search here for names and also specific dates without entering a name:
http://www.cwgc.org/search-for-war-dead.aspx

US KIA search here: http://www.abmc.gov/search/wwii.php
but unfortunately no search by KIA date and f.ex. no Paul E. Crowell
in that database.

on http://raf-112-squadron.org/86thfghonor_roll.html
Crowell, Paul EO-1692650527FS86FG12AFKIAHometown: Westmoreland County, PA.

sorry, good luck, bye,
FrankieS
