Re: Sqn/Ldr Andy Fletcher DFC
Hello Andy,
Today will probable be the last day that I'm able to handle the PC. Re Fletcher: Andrew William FLETCHER, S/Ldr, (37280) DFC & Bar, M.D., from Cardston, Alberta, enlisted in mid 1935.In June/40 he was flying Blenheims in the No. 235 Sqdn. and was on many rough ops over Europe. Posted to No. 272 Sqdn. on Blenheims in Nov. for patrols from N.Ireland, they converted to Baufighters and went to Egypt in May/41 with S/Ldr Fletcher A.S.C.O. After much action he took No. 272 Sqdn. to Malta. His first DFC was in Oct/40 and the second Oct/41. Postwar ran a big family farm in Warner, Alberta until recent retirement to Lethbridge. He died in 1978. There is a picture (size passport) in Les Allisons "Canadians in the Royal Air Force" on page 137. Best regards, Henk. |

Re: Sqn/Ldr Andy Fletcher DFC
No picture, but there is biographical detail and desciptions of his awards here:
http://airforce.ca/uploads/airforce/...canrafe-l.html This site is a bit disparaging of Les Allison's book. It seems that he was "overclaiming" Canadian heritage in a number of cases. Fletcher is the real thing, though. Mark

Re: Sqn/Ldr Andy Fletcher DFC
Hi Andy,
There is a photo of him on the back cover of "Those Other Eagles", by Chris Shores. I thought I had seen a bigger version of it somewhere, but after having a quick look through the book I can't find it. Perhaps Chris Shores still has access to the original photo. Best Regards Andy Fletcher

Re: Sqn/Ldr Andy Fletcher DFC
I knew I'd seen the same photo somewhere. Page 47 of "Beaufighter Aces of WWII", by Andrew Thomas, shows Fletcher standing in front of a Beaufighter during his time with 272 Sqn.
Best Regards Andy Fletcher

Re: Sqn/Ldr Andy Fletcher DFC
Andy Bird,
Check with John Davies at Grub Street. Andy Thomas emailed him a nice scan of his picture. Or send me an email through TOCH and I can forward it to you. Enjoy! Frank.
