Mustang Mk.III

Hi all,

My interest is about s/n FB125. This Mustang served with the 129 Sqn from April 1944 and had several of achievements against V-1s through the summer. I have no trace to its service untill 7th May 1945. Then it was wrecked when abandoned take-off and overshot at RAF Bentwaters.
Does anyone have info what Sqn(s) used it after the 129 ?

Regards,
Michal

No further info in Air-Britain's "book of numbers" I'm afraid.

Michal

When I was a young lad I used to live near to "Fairlop".

FB125 may well qualify as one of the "longest serving" Merlin Mustang in the RAF. It flew with 129Sqdn on their first operation with Mustangs on 26 April 1944 but did not quite make it to the last mission. FB125 last flew on 20 April 1945 and 129Sqdn flew three more ops after that date including 9 May as escort to the landings in the Channel Islands. FB125 was 'F' until 25 August 1944 and then became 'C'.

I do not have details of its loss. Air Britain record that it "overshot on take off from Bentwaters on 7 May 1945". There were no operations on that day but apparently people were doing a lot of celebrating perhaps that might have something to do with it?

Hi There ,
Try contacting the RAF Museum at Hendon and ask them for a copy of the Form 78 Aircraft Movement card for this A/C .
If available it may tell what ship it was sent on when it arrived in the UK and where it went.
The Museum is pretty good and generally does not charge for a single form 78.
Takes about 3-4 weeks.
Cheers
