Ju188 crash Wiltshire 1943
HELP PLEASE, has anyone got any information about the KG6 Ju188E-1 "3E+CL" (260198) which crashed on 1st November 1943 at Church Farm, Kilmington, Wiltshire ?
As well as eye-witness accounts or combat reports, I'm particularly interested in any images of this aircraft or descriptions of it's camouflage and markings, etc. I do have some info about the crew from the Aircrew Remberance Society site but any other info regarding the crew, their unit and the mission that night would be very helpful. THANKS, Sean. |

Re: Ju188 crash Wiltshire 1943
The KG6 history shows this as a daylight (dusk) nuisance attack on Southampton, Hastings and Newhaven. A later POW report with a section on this raid says that on 1-11-43 twelve aircraft of I/KG6 took off from Chievres to attack Southampton, with the target to be bombed through cloud on a Knickebein intersection. While over the Channel a recall message was sent and seven aircraft returned but five aircraft carried on losing one of their number (the 3E+CL). The crew of Oblt. Schmid fell to a Mosquito near Hungerford Berkshire but his unit is indicated in the KG 6 history as Erprobungstaffel 188 rather than I/KG6. There is a combat report for the Schmid crew but 3E+CL is shown to have decended under cloud cover, circled and then crashed with no N/F action.
The Home Office Key Points reports just states on Monday 1st. Nov. shortly before darkness, eight aircraft came inland with incidents reported in Kent, Isle-of-Wight, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset - no Key Points affected, Hope this is of some Help, Brian Bines |

Re: Ju188 crash Wiltshire 1943
This ac took off from Chievres as one of 12 to carry out a bad weather nuisance raid on Southampton. It crashed at Church Farm, Maiden Bradley killing Lt Kurt Recklin (pilot), Uffz Karl Overhoff (observer), Uffz Karl-Heinz Siegler (WOp) and Uffz Karl Weisskamp (gunner). Recklin had arrived on 12/KG 6 at Bretigny 16 April 43 before joining 3/KG 6 in Foggia 7 Jul 43. All 4 were buried at Heycombe Cemetery, Bath.
Best example of what a I/KG 6 Ju 188 looked like can be got from Mark Postlethwaite's painting-look at his website and you should get an idea http://www.posart.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=87 Last edited by Chris Goss; 31st July 2012 at 15:24. Reason: Link |
