Russian blog about air battles on Artic (and central Finland) front
Hello,
I was searching something else, but found today a very interesting Soviet blog giving Soviet, Finnish and German data about air battles on the Artic front. There is no details of WNr and so on, but still a good detail level. It is in Russian but it is readable with translation robots. The URL: http://cyclolife.livejournal.com/ Although the primary subject of the blog was biking and other sport, it includes also a number of posts about air battles in Winter War and from January to May 1944. |

Re: Russian blog about air battles on Artic (and central Finland) front
Hello!
As a Finn I am very interested what you comprehend with the "Central Finland"? For me Central Finland is about Jyväskylä city and the county around. No war was waged there and even less in the air above. Please do not think that I am disparaging you, just curious of the Southern European viewpoint. Also Germans during the war had very different idea what Central Finland was (than Finns). This was also reflected on some loss records. Regards, Kari |

Re: Russian blog about air battles on Artic (and central Finland) front
No problem Kari,
What I was trying to quickly describe as "Central Finland front" was the large espace between the area where German aircraft and troops were active in the north and the lake Onega. This area being covered by weak Finnish air units on the Axis side. I tried to make the distinction between N Finland (where German were active), central Finland (see above) and S Finland (roughly englobing the Svir front, the Karelian isthmus and the Gulf of Finland: all these areas are not covered by this blog as far as I know). Best regards |

Re: Russian blog about air battles on Artic (and central Finland) front
Hello!
I suppose East Carelia (Karelia) might be better name for what you are after. See this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Karelia The map has silly name "West Karelia" which I have not seen before and have never heard used. Laatokan Karjala - Ladoga Karelia and Karjalan Kannas - Karelian Isthmus are the more familiar names to me. Note that in Russian sense East Karelia is yet different from the Finnish viewpoint. Not explained in the English Wikipedia, but is there in the Finnish Wikipedia article. All the best, Kari Last edited by Kari Lumppio; 18th October 2012 at 21:16. |
