Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Hi all,

Someone would have some information about the use of the Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI in WW2?

I found that this a/c was used during WW2 for flights to and from Norway and retained the same civilian painting and code D-AQUI.

I found that D-AQUI was used for troop transport from April 1940 until 9 september 1940. After that, it was returned to Lufthansa.

There are details of the operational history of this Ju-52 by Lufthansa? Airports used, crew, etc?

Best regards,
Franklin

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Ok. Here is what I have on D-AQUI, both of them, but one wing of the "original" is still flying on todays D-AQUI / D-CDLH. History you state in WW2 does not match what I have here. From it (I think) it was operated by DLH in Norway up to 1945, not a Luftwaffe transport Staffeln, but seems was transferred to Luftwaffe almost at wars end. This history below is only collected from many sources (including info from Norwegian and German experts writings on its history from many years ago). Additions to its history is always welcome, the Stkz. for the present one is missing from this collected data.

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Hi Ed,

Thanks a lot!

D-AQUI used floatplanes in DLH in 1940-1945?

I found these two photos on the internet, with no indication of date, airport or copyright. Are they an photomontage?

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Yes, seem they are something like that. The Bf 109 is heading for immidiate destruction, unless some super-quick aerobatics be performed.

I think there are a few wartime images of D-AQUI around but I do not have any.

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Dear Ed,
W.Nr. 5489 LN-DAH "Falken" was taken over by Luftwaffe on 06.06.40 after completing overhaul at the DNL's workshop at Gressholmen island (Oslo). It was flown to Norderney to change to standard Luftwaffe radio equipment and was reported here on 16.08.40. However, German authorities gave the aircraft to DLH for use on the DLH operated service from Hommelvik (Trondheim) via Tromsö to Kirkenes. The aircraft was ready for transfer back to Norway on about 21.08.40. Reg. D-AQUI and named "Kurt Wintgens". The route opened on 20.08.40 by another ex. Norwegian aircraft, LN-DAF "Najaden", now registered D-AKIY and named "Richard Schneider". The first flight by D-AQUI on this route was on 22.09.40, but then only to Tromsö before returning to Hommelvik. North of Tromsö the route was operated only in the summer season. From 02.08.43 the route was cut back to Hammerfest and from 18.05.44 to Billefjord. The last DLH-flight between Hommelvik and Tromsö was carried out on 1. May 1945.
D-AQUI was used throughout the war, and to my knowledge, suffered no major incidents. The plane lost during the war was ex. Norwegian LN-DAI "Hauken" which was used by DLH on the same route as D-AQUB "Hans Berr". This aircraft crashed fatally during landing in Hommelvik on 01.03.43.

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Thank you Seaplanes.
"Crash" must have been very minour or confusion. I will update history after your info. It remains, when did the DNL purchase the aircraft?
Regards
Ed

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Hi, Seaplanes and Ed,

Is there any report about the crews of D-AQUI when in service at Lufthansa in 1940-1945?

D-AQUI used floatplanes in DLH in 1940-1945?

Best regards,
Franklin

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

All three ex. norwegian Ju 52's, the only aircraft to be used on this DLH line northbound from Trondheim-Hommelvik, were float equipped. Hommelvik was a Luftwaffe seaplane station. These aircraft were initially flown by ex. DNL Norwegian crews, at leat up to early spring 1941. They were then probably considered by the Germans as a security risk and rleaved from duty. Most of them also fled to England and Canada to join the free Norwegian forces there. For the rest of the war these aircraft were flown by DLH crews. Unfortunately, I have not further details of these flights.

Re: Ju 52/3m g2e D-AQUI

Here is rather poor photo of Ju 52/3m ge/See D-AQUB (presumably somewhere in Norway during the war). Green splinter camouflage on upper-surfaceses, Light Blue (Gray-ish) under and either Bright-Red or Light-Grey registration letters on fuselage side. Fin cross seems without Red border area, only Black on White circle, but contrast is low on photo so this is not certain.
