Ernst Fischmutt He111 POW 9 July 1940??
Hi guys
Reading Dimsie Stones' book Operation Bograt (79 Squadron 1940), he writes that he took charge of the only survivor of a Heinkel shot down on 9 July 1940 off Felixstowe. (I/KG53) He names the airman as Ernst Fischmutt, a supposed 1936 Olympics Gold Medal winner. I can't find such a name in the German Olympics team of 1936, and I can't find his name as a member of the Heinkel crew. Over to someone who knows!! Cheers Brian |

Dear old Dimsie's memory seems to be at fault I'm afraid. No German officer of that name was reported captured during early July 1940. Also, the account as published in his 1991 autobiography mentions Folkestone not Felixstowe ?

In that He 111 there was Uffz Neuburger, Ernst, who was reported as MIA (the others dead). Change of name perhaps?
