Re: Mystery Airfield Germany August 24, 1944
Thanks blythsco / Christian,
Intersesting "weck-(baute?)-park" there near Airfield. To the upper right half in the picture, there is (I think) an aircraft salvage park or similar. Notice how organised this seems, fuselages(?) in neat rows. Reminds me of this at "Rothenburg" in Life Photo ( http://images.google.com/hosted/life...26tbs%3Disch:1 ) Best regards ed |

Re: Mystery Airfield Germany August 24, 1944
Hello Ed
You may have solved that mystery. Originally I thought they might be some type of drop tank but then compared them with the nearby railcars for reference and they would have to be very large drop tanks. This was as I understand an aircraft repair facility so your theory makes sense. Cheers Scott |

Re: Mystery Airfield Germany August 24, 1944
Well, not exactly. Comparing sizes between that nearest large house (the one there today is apx. 30 m wide by using ruler tool in Google Earth Maps) and these "objects", they are about half that long, some slightly shorter.
Ju 88 ? fuselages (my favourity of course) were apx 13,60 nose to tail post but shape seems not quite correct but on some. These were what then? Different types or perhaps one piece fighter wings.. Fw 190´s ? All lying flat in some rows (judging by shadows?) but other rows also having fuselages. Then further right there are more "cigar-shaped" objects. Airfield is 100% Zwickau but area were these "objects" were stored is all paved now and has houses too, so searching there now, there are likely no traces left .... (B/W image shows north as down and to the right). Attached is screenshot from Google showing area where objects were stored. Airfield and resident gliders in left half of image. The gliders visible have about 17 m wingspans... Last edited by edNorth; 23rd March 2012 at 19:33. |

Re: Mystery Airfield Germany August 24, 1944
You may be onto something Ed since this was an FW-190 repair depot.

Old thread, but it can be revived with a lucky find: The repair depot in Zwickau, photographed from ground level - perhaps useful to some: http://www.ebay.com/itm/B-W-WWII-Pho...item2ec6f9a327
