Stig,
Don't know how correct your information is, but I have Oblt. Helmut Lölhöffel von Löwensprung as Staka of 5./ZG 1 when he was posted missing in action on 11th February 1942...

Re: Zerstörergeschwader 1 Staka Questions

Hmmm

Either Carlsen/Meyer is seriously wrong with regard to St.Kap. within ZG 1 or possibly "we" have a problem with St.Kap. and St. Führer.

Cheers

Zerstörergeschwader 1 Staka Questions

Gents

Thank you for your replies on this question:

So far then, we have the following suggestions:

5./ZG 1:
4.1.1942-8.6.1942 Oblt Gerhard Walther/or Oblt. Helmut Lölhöffel von Löwensprung MIA 11-Feb-42, followed by Helmut Viedebantt
10.6.1942-1.10.1942 Oblt Rolf Krauspe

2./ZG 1:
6.1942 - 8.1942 Oblt Fritz Freyschmidt
8-1942 - 10.6.1943 Hptm Oskar Gehring

Can anyone add anything further to this at all?

Regards Richard.

Many thanks for your reply, the NVL should be an accurate source of information on this.

I am still hoping that others might also be able to chime in?

Regards Richard.

Richard,
The NVMs are far more accurate than the Quartermaster's returns with regard to personnel, for the following reasons:
1. They reported up the line as to losses of personnel that needed replacing;
2. They reported up the line the next-of-kin details for notification to them; and
3. They reported up the line the loss of command officers (Staffelkapitän, Gruppenkommandeur, Adjutant, TO, Geschwaderkommodore, etc.) that required an immediate, fresh, appointment in front-line units.

I may be wrong, but I believe the NVMs were completed from personnel documents held at unit level by direct reference to them; the QM returns were completed by groundcrew for aircraft losses/damage from aircraft paperwork that they would reference, together with the addition of crew names. The crew names were incorrect on so many occasions, that I can envisage a conversation between two groundcrew thus:
Hans: Rolf, who was in 'Black 9' today?
Rolf: That was Feldwebel so-and-so
Hans: How do you spell that name?
Rolf then gives his best guesstimate of the surname...

Handwriting also had a role to play in the QM returns, I believe. Ah, the wonders of research...!

Zerstörergeschwader 1 Staka Questions

Using the excellent 'Luftwaffe Officers Career Summaries' from Henry L. deZeng IV and Douglas G. Stankey, the following information is listed against the suggested personnel for holding the position of Staka 5./ZG1 in this timeframe:

Oberleutnant Helmut Lölhöffel von Löwensprung 04-01-1942 - 11-02-1942
Oberleutnant Helmut Viedebantt 00-00-0000 – 00-00-000
Oberleutnant Gerhard Walther 01-10-1942 – 08-10-1942
Oberleutnant Rolf Krauspe 01-10-1942 – 28-02-1943

As alluded to ealier there might be a problem with St.Kap. and St. Führer.

Regards Richard.
