22 January 1943 - JG27

Hi

I am hoping that somebody may have made a study of the events of 22 January 1943. During the afternoon medium bombers of 2 Group bombed a target near Ghent. They had various forms of escort/protection which included Mustangs of 169 and 268Sqn who were tasked to fly a diversionary sweep in the area. Each squadron lost two aircraft and their pilots. 268Sqn records are pretty clear that both their losses were due to coastal Flak and 169Sqn lost two aircraft in air combat with JG27. Tony Wood lists five German claims for Mustangs destroyed - one by a Flak unit and four by JG27.

268Sqn were also involved in combat with JG27 and two of their pilots were credited each with an Fw190 “probably destroyed”. Can anyone provide further detail on German losses that day that would confirm these claims?

Steve

Re: 22 January 1943 - JG27

Thank you Redcap

Thank you that site seems very helpful. I have quite a lot of information about the British losses. Two combat reports made by 268Sqn pilots F/O Bird and Sgt Barnes record close range attacks on Fw190s but no cameras were used. At the moment I cannot tell whether the information on "Wings to Victory" from German sources confirms whether JG1 suffered any losses that match the British claims - my immediate impression is that it does not.

I will need to try to get a translation.

Steve

Re: 22 January 1943 - JG27

The JG 27 was exclusively a Messerschmitt 109-equipped unit. In any case, I have no losses for them on 22.January 1943.

Our FW 190 db reveals no losses on 22.January 1943, and only one, from the 9./JG 2 on the next day. I'm not counting the 10.(J)/JG 26 loss of WNr.5636 lost to Flak near Beachy Head.

Sorry I cannot be of more help,
GRM

Re: 22 January 1943 - JG27

Well Gentlemen thanks to everybody for being so polite. I cannot explain how I brought JG27 into this story the Luftwaffe unit on 22 January 1943 was of course JG1. The cause must be either the weight of grey hair sapping my strength or something to do with Halloween I guess!

Mr Morrison would your information confirm whether any JG1 aircraft were damaged on 22/1/43?

Thanks again for your patience

Steve

22 January 1943 - JG 1

Hello Steve

There are no losses, either total or damaged, listed for 22 January 1943 included in Jagdgeschwader 1 und 11 Teil 1 1939 - 1943 by Prien and Rodeike. I hope this helps.

Horrido!

Leo

Thank you Leo it is a surprise that apparently there were no aircraft at least damaged.
