Date was 10th June 44.
412 Sqdn, Sqdn code was "VZ"
Spitfire XI
Serial number: Understood to have been MJ136
A/c in Sqdn letter was "S"
Pilot: was P/O D.R.C. Jamieson.Safe, returned to unit on foot.
Franks FCL vol 3 has:
Glycol leak made engine overheat; Belly-landed alongside road, South of Tilly-sur-Seulles.

Other sources quote this aircraft as:

10 June 1944
No.412 (RCAF) Sqn
Spitfire LF.IX MJ255:VZ-S

Engine failure, crash-landed Allied territory. Not due to enemy action

F/L H.G. GARWOOD - returned to unit next day.

See: 2ndTAF. Vol.1/Shores & Thomas pp.130 (colour side-view) & 154-5 (Photo).

Franks (FCL3/33), also has Spitfire LF.IX MJ136 lost over the Pas de Calais on 11 May 1944, after a mid-air collision with another 412 Sqn RCAF aircraft.

RAF Aircraft MA100 to MZ999 by Air Britain also says MJ255 as the aircraft in question.

As for Spitfire LF.IX MJ136 lost over the Pas de Calais on 11 May 1944, it can be discounted in connection with the photo, as at that date no Spitfires were wearing D-Day stripes!

Have looked again in Frank's FCL vol 3.
11th May 44
412 Sqdn
F/O. J.S. Hamilton - Safe.
Spitfire IX: MJ136
Ramrod 867
Collided with MH427( Pilot: F/O R.W. Thatcher - Safe) over Pas de Calais; Baled out and rescued. See 10th June 1944.
So agree if MJ136 was lost on 11th May 44 it could not have been the "VZ-S" loss with "Invasion Stripes" seen in the photo.
Question now is if Pilot of MJ255 on the 11th June was F/L. H. G. Garwood, then which Spitfire was P/O D.R.C. Jamieson - (Safe, returned to unit on foot) flying on the 11th June 44 ?
As for the P-47, possibly from the 57th FG 65th FS ??? (numbered a/c "40" to "69").

P-47 serial number looks like 44-21056 "Jeanie" ? so P-47D-30-RE of the 57th FG 65th FS.

Re VZ-S, Another photo of her is on page 110 of Spitfire the Canadians.vol 1.
Caption says:
"On 11th June 1944 F/O H.G. Garwood of 412 Squadron suffered an engine failure.
He managed to return to his squadron a few days later.#His Spitfire IX, (MJ255) is shown here on June 17th 1944.
Passing by are Canadian Shermans moving up for the attack on Tilly-sur-Seulles.

Photo is a little different to the one shown in this thread, so perhaps they are stills from a film ?
