Mosquito Loss 19 Sep 42

Fw Rudolf Piffer of 11/JG 1 claimed a Mosquito near Osnabrück 1441 hrs on 19 Sep 42 whilst Lt Gerhard Steiger of 2/JG 1 is reported to have been killed in combat with a Mosquito at Pfahlhausen. Do these link with the loss of DK326 of 105 Sqn which took off from Horsham St Faith at 1234 hrs that day headed for Berlin?

Mosquito Thunder, Stuart R. Scott p41
A formation of 3 Mosquitos was attacked by one FW 190;
DK326 (T/O 12.34 hours), M for "Mother", S/L Norman Henry Messervy DFC and P/O Frank Holland crashed 30km NNW of Osnabrück, just south of Ankum.
Then more likely IV./JG1 rather I./JG1 (Bf 109s).

Re: Mosquito Loss 19 Sep 42

This is what I have but sources still state that Steiger was lost in combat this day. Thanks

Re: Mosquito Loss 19 Sep 42

Hi Chris

Maybe I'm missing something blindingly obvious here, but - other than by accident or collision - I couldn't see how Steiger would have been lost "in combat" with DK326. 105 Sqn flew unarmed (bomber version) Mossies didn't they, so DK326 certainly wouldn't have shot him down!

Wonder if you've found any other info?

Ian
