Re: Junkers 88 W.Nr.0401 crash 23.11.1942
Some extracts of the book "Fighter over Tunisia" for 28 November 1942:
"242 Squadron had landed at Djidjelli at 1745, when five Ju 88s suddenly came in through heavy AA fire, and bombed the airfield, Fl.Lt. Dundas being injured. F/Sgt. Fortt and Sgt. Mallinson were still in their aircraft and both scrambled again, Fortt with his straps undone and no flying helmet on. Flying through the AA bursts he shot down one Ju 88 in flames, three crew members baling out as it crashed in the sea 200 yards from Bone. Mallinson in the meantime shot down two more of the bombers, damaging a third. 111 Squadron made one claim during the day, FO Crawford probably destroying a Ju 88." .... "the 48th. Fighter Squadron of the 14th Fighter Group provided a reconnaissance over Gabes and Medenine. The pilots intercepted two Ju 88s, and both were claimed shot down by Lts V. H. Smith and Eubank. " ... "KG 60 reported the loss of two Ju 88s during the day, including one flown by the Kommodore, Maj Kurt Brand, but whether these were those shot down by 242 Sqn at Djidjelli, or by the P-38s further south, is uncertain." |
