Question about Bf 109 prototype serial #'s

Hello all,

I've read various sources regarding the serials of the first 20 or so Bf 109 prototypes (Bf 109V1 WNr. 758, Bf 109V3 WNr. 760, etc.), and noticed that some of those serials may also have been 109E-3 serials (hence the 666-994 production batch manufactured during 1939 [?]).

Anyway, some questions: Were those the actual serials of the prototypes? If so how did they distinguish those serials from the 109E-3 serials?
