Unsettling...

I think the first two pictures below are a bit unsettling and rather sad, showing Hans-Joachim Marseille a short time before his death.
Although he may have been of slight disposition anyway, I feel these pictures show the strain and perhaps undernourishment he may have been suffering from at this time. If so, his huge victories against strong opposition are all the more admirable.
The last picture speaks for itself....

Re: Unsettling...

The first photo was taken about 13-Jun-42, not at all near the time of his death. The second photo looks to be about the same time. As for the third photo, how to we know it is Marseille? It looks as though the face and head are swathed in gauze, as if burned. Marseille never suffered an injury like that.

It was not at all unusual for soldiers in the desert to look "gaunt". Bad rations, etc. led to many looking very thin and many had dysentery.

Re: Unsettling...

I would agree with John. Hans-Joachim Marseille was of such, rather slim, posture. If one takes a look at the guy next to him, Hptm./Maj. Gustav Rödel?, it looks like a man on a perfectly normal rations. Nothing wrong with Marseille on these photos.

As for the third photo, I do believe that it was circulated as that of Hans-Joachim Marseille. The apparent gauze might in fact have been a bandage used to keep the deceased's jaw closed.
