92 BG B-17 (42-97479) Crash 30.12.1944 Location?

Hi Guys,

As Podington airfield is only a few miles from me I was wondering if anyone might have information on the loss of B-17 Serial No. 42-97949 which crashed on the 30.12.1944 near Podington??? I have driven around the area but cannot seem to locate the area. I wonder if anyone can help?

Attached http://videotechmedia.co.uk two stills from a 16mm film Doc Furniss took whilst stationed at Podington. Note the RAF crew putting out the flames? Makes me wonder if it is somewhere near an RAF base??

Thanks for reading, hope someone can help further?

Regards,

Melvin

One engine out and poor visibility, overshot the runway and started another circuit in the traffic pattern. A second engines prop wind milling, the plane was pulled up to clear a hill and stalled. The aircraft crashed and burned. All crewmembers were killed.
